Latest Silicon Valley status symbol: The plug-in hybrid

 

Somekh, the former president of equipment maker Novellus and an alum of Applied Materials, has started OurPower.org as a way to promote plug-in hybrid conversions. Converting a regular Prius to a plug-in isn't cheap. The price runs about $10,000. Even if gas rises to $4 a gallon, it would still take nearly 100,000 miles of driving before you broke even. (OurPower.org is working with A123 Systems, the lithium-ion battery maker, to perform the conversions.)

 

No mention of the price of electricity when calculating the pay off date (independence day).

He says batteries have always been a problem with solar installations, whether that's for RV, home or other systems. Sachs and his colleagues have started a company called 1366 Technologies. With the help of a recent $12.4 million grant, the team is building a pilot-scale manufacturing plant to fabricate their first batch of solar cells. The cells currently have an efficiency of 19.5%, and cost about $1.65 per watt. That´s a 27% improvement in efficiency over similar commercial solar cells of today, which have about 15% efficiency and cost about $2.10 per watt.

That last time I calculated I used 6 dollars per watt (installed by home owner).

It was profitable then when adding in rebates from the tax collection fund.

There is a point at which the failure to invest in power will be relatively too costly.

It is on the way.

As the price on 'collective' power continues to increase and as the cost on power-independence continues to lower there will be a point at which the only one's remaining on the dole will be those who can afford that hihger cost while everyone is free of it.

That means it takes a lot of energy to increase the temperature of water. It also means that water stores heat energy for a long time. Think of a pool, lake, or the ocean. It stays warm long after the sun goes down and even through cooler days in autumn. Water has the second-highest specific heat capacity of any known substance, which makes it perfect for storing large amounts of heat energy, just as a battery stores electricity. In the form of steam, water can continue to generate electricity when the sun is down and recharge the heat “battery” when the sun is up.

While there are many cases where it does not make sense to use the available electricity to make hydrogen in order to make more electricity, there are many instances where it does make sense. It boils down to more of an economic argument than a scientific argument that requires some understanding of off-peak power availabilities as well as how to optimize renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. Today, wind and solar power are stationary intermittent energy sources, limited by the hours in which they can actually generate power that has to be used ‘there and then’, or be lost. Hydrogen by electrolysis becomes a ‘dispatchable’ energy option that allows later use of power that has been previously harnessed by the wind or the sun.

There is no doubt that PHEVs result in good fuel economy figures — GM is currently touting its PHEV-to be, the Volt, as getting 150MPG over all. However, they aren’t necessarily super efficient. Instead, they achieve these high numbers by supplementing the power produced by their gasoline engines with power taken from the grid. This has caused controversy lately, as hybrid-opponents often claim that battery production and the use of energy from the grid actually makes these cars bigger GHG polluters. However, if you look at this chart posted by GCC, you can see that both HEVs and PHEVs have a clear advantage over conventional cars, even when battery production is factored in:

 

The Chart is poor.

Solar Panels are now affordable as a means of reducing the cost of electricity. That means that a person can invest in solar panels and reduce their monthly electric bill. That means that the whole concept of discrediting electric cars based upon the high environmental costs of electricity is ludicrous. If you have an electric car and you have one because you want to reduce monetary costs (avoid the high price of gas) then you can reduce the high price of electricity with an investment in Solar Panels.

AND Solar Panels are becoming cheaper and Solar Panels are producing more current. The affordability of Solar Panels (as a means of reducing the cost of consuming electricity) is getting better (more power for less cost).

If the idea behind a change from petroleum powered transportation to electric powered transportation includes an environmental concern (added to the monetary concern) the idea is to stop burning gasoline and stop producing carbon dioxide and if that additional concern (the environmental concern) applies to the automobile it (the environmental concern) can apply to the Solar Panels.

There you have, now, two concerns.

1.      Monetary (you spend less money on electricity and less money on gasoline)

2.      Environmental (you produce less pollution with the car and you produce less pollution as you make your own electricity out of sun-light).

There is a third concern that may be even more important the first two concerns.

You become independent. You are POWER-INDEPENDENT.

If the flow of collective gasoline stops – you keep going.

If the flow of collective electricity stops – you keep producing electricity.

That is called a win/win situation.

 

More benefit

 

Less cost

I’ve written several posts lately about plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and their need for renewable energy charging sources. PHEVs are a stepping stone as the future of transportation heads toward electric vehicles powered either by batteries or hydrogen fuel cells. Solar power would be the ultimate source of clean energy for either type of electric vehicle.
