Power up your home for cheap

My first panel was a disaster, and so was my second.Fortunately, by the third attempt I had already bought a really good course that made it all a lot easier.
(with it, I built the panel you see on the right) First month results: cut my electric bill by 10%. I was as happy as a little child! Second month: slashed my electricity bill a further 50% - up to an amazing 60%. Third month - got off the grid entirely. Haven't paid a dime on electricity ever since.

All electric versus not all electric

Switching from the Prius and Camry Hybrids, I project that our annual car upkeep costs (fuel, and regular service) will drop from around $2600 a year to around $300 a year.

Thorium?

A few weeks before the tsunami struck Fukushima’s uranium reactors and shattered public faith in nuclear power, China revealed that it was launching a rival technology to build a safer, cleaner, and ultimately cheaper network of reactors based on thorium.

Synthetic Photosynthesis

New research out of MIT has created an artificial leaf that's not only cheap to build, but resilient too. The leaf is like a thinner version of a playing card in size. When placed in water in sunlight, it uses the new, inexpensive catalysts to convert the liquid into hydrogen and oxygen — and each of the gasses is emitted from a different side of the leaf — which can then be used as a power source. Using the leaf, a gallon of water can be used to generate enough power to fuel a house for a day. Currently the device functions at 10 times the efficiency of photosynthesis, but the researchers are sure they can improve it further.

Algea cleans up?

Common freshwater algae might hold a key to cleaning up after disasters such as Japan's Fukushima nuclear accident, scientists said yesterday at a meeting of the American Chemical Society in Anaheim, California.

SpaceX Rocket

He estimates launching the 227-foot-tall rocket at $80 to $125 million, less than one-third the cost of the Delta IV and roughly one-tenth that of the space shuttle. If SpaceX stays within that cost, the Falcon Heavy will deliver payloads at the $1,000-per-pound benchmark long sought by the space industry.

More Panels more power

While only about three-quarters as efficient of conventional silicon panels, the lower manufacturing costs of CdTe thin film panels make them cheaper, measured by per watt of capacity, than any currently viable commercial technology.
