Ally’s products offer returns that are well above what is currently available from most banks: 1.65% for savings, 1.7% for money markets, and 2% for CDs (for which there no penalties for early withdrawal).

What is the rate of inflation?

Valcent Products Inc. (the "Company", or "Valcent"), http://www.valcent.net - Valcent Products (EU) Ltd, http://www.valcent.eu, the UK based wholly owned subsidiary of Valcent Products Inc., announce that their first full scale VertiCropTM High Density Vegetable Growing System is now operational. Constructed as a joint venture with Paignton Zoological and Environmental Park in South Devon, the final touches to the system have now been completed and the VertiCropTM planted out with its first crop of lettuce.

Occupying a purpose built polytunnel in the centre of the Environmental Park and open to the Zoo's 500,000 visitors on a year round basis, the Paignton VertiCropTM is the world's first moving vertical growing system capable of producing over 11,000 heads of lettuce or other vegetable crops every 3 to 4 weeks. Eventually the system will be planted to allow sequential harvesting to provide the Zoo with fresh vegetables daily for its many animal species.

From an e-mail:

Valcent Products Inc. (the "Company", or "Valcent"), http://www.valcent.net, today announces the company's vertical farming expansion with the introduction of a new VertiCrop(tm) product line for use in a warehouse environment. Using the latest horticultural lighting technologies, combined with state of the art irrigation and nutrient delivery systems, Valcent Products (EU) Limited (VEU) is in the final stages of developing a commercial application of its VertiCrop(tm) High Density Vegetable Growing System suitable for installing in industrial type warehouses, as an alternative to polytunnels or glasshouses.

"A warehouse environment will provide a commercial grower with significant benefits, particularly in areas of climate extremes," said Chris Bradford, Managing Director, Valcent Products (EU). "Growing crops in a glasshouse or polytunnel can involve high energy costs to maintain stable temperatures suitable for healthy plant growth. Growing in a warehouse environment with a VertiCrop(tm) vertical farming system improves production and lower costs."

For solar shoppers these days, the price is right. Panel prices have fallen about 40 percent since the middle of last year, driven down partly by an increase in the supply of a crucial ingredient for panels, according to analysts at the investment bank Piper Jaffray.

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-efficiency/hybrid-technology/5-hybrid-battery-pack-improvements.htm

The battery pack in a hybrid car is arguably one of the most important parts that make it go. As you may already know, a hybrid car makes use of a combination of an internal combustion engine and electric motor. While the gasoline that provides energy for the engine is stored in a fuel tank, the electric motor gets its power from a different source.

Anyone,

The battery is also a part of an all electric car, not just a "hybrid car".

"Hybrid" cars are like on/off road bikes, not good at either on or off road, so what is the point?

I think the point is to keep the oil flowing. You may have other thoughts. Where did you get those thoughts?

The lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery is one of those alternatives. Many people are now familiar with lithium-ion battery technology through their use in various electronic devices.

Unlike the lead-acid or nickel metal hydride batteries in most electric cars — which are heavy and difficult to dispose of — we use a proprietary Lithium ion battery pack.

EN: The Model S family sedan is slated for 2011, which is right around the corner. Is the average American ready for an electric car?

DO: Absolutely. We’ve developed long-range EV options – batteries that go 240 miles on a charge and can be recharged overnight in a 110 or 220 volt socket, like a cell phone. The average driver in this country travels less than 40 miles per day in their car, and I think we’re evolving towards a situation where people are discerning car’s best uses – every vehicle in a garage doesn’t have to serve every purpose, so your Tesla can be your everyday commuting car, and you have another vehicle for towing, or long road trips. People are already doing that.

That being said, any market research in this field is, essentially, conceptual market research; there aren’t enough EVs on the road yet, so people are really forced to imagine a new situation, which can be difficult. We’re obviously focusing on the deep-penetration hybrid market – places like Los Angeles and Boston – but our goal is to make our vehicles attractive to everyone. At the end of the day, it’s incumbent on automakers to build attractive, fun, well-designed and high-performance vehicles. And that’s exactly what we’re doing and will continue to do.

EN: What about concerns that you don’t have an infrastructure in place to deliver and service these vehicles? The typical driver has probably never seen a Tesla store.

DO: Our store strategy is robust, and we’re rolling out stores in Munich and Chicago in September, which adds to our current stores in West L.A., Silicon Valley, New York, London and Seattle. By the end of the year, we’ll have rolled out new stores in Miami, Washington D.C., Toronto, and Monaco. But even where we don’t have stores, we employ remote techs who will make house calls for service and repairs and, if need be, personally deliver the cars to the nearest Tesla store.

Our view on all of this is absolutely long-term: We don’t need to sell an EV to every single person, tomorrow, to be successful. Over time, we will create a mass market for our cars that will be sustainable and grow based on vehicle quality, design, performance and customer satisfaction. These new vehicles are the next step in that evolution.

Tesla reaches profitability

Earlier this month, Tesla Motors announced a major corporate milestone and achieved company-wide profitability. The newest member of the global auto industry earned approximately $1 million on revenue of $20 million in July thanks to record sales of Roadster 2, the second iteration of Tesla's award-winning, all-electric sports car.

We shipped a record 109 vehicles in July and enjoyed a surge in new Roadster purchases. The strong financial results show that there is brisk demand for a unique car that offers performance with a clean conscience. We've delivered about 700 cars to customers so far, and new customers buy Roadsters every week. Our customers are proud to buy the Roadster: Not only will it beat virtually every other car off the line, but buying the Roadster helps fund development of more affordable, mainstream EVs for the mass market.

The highly acclaimed Roadster -- faster than a Porsche and twice as energy efficient as a Prius – remains the only highway-capable electric vehicle for sale in North America or Europe. The 2010 model-year Roadster, which Tesla is building and shipping to customers now, features an array of enhancements over our first-generation car. Those include a more powerful heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system, more comfortable seats and a more luxurious dashboard and cabin.

Drag race your Roadster!

We are currently delivering the Roadster Sport, an even higher performance car that does 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, compared to 3.9 seconds for the standard Roadster. This car is seriously fun -- faster than most other street-legal cars, even Ferraris and Lamborghinis with far higher sticker prices. The Roadster Sport includes a more powerful motor, custom-tuned suspension and forged wheels.

Less than 24 hours after receiving his new car in July, Seattle-area customer James Morrison drove his Sport 180 miles to Portland, Oregon, site of the famed Wayland Invitational Drag Race. High-performance driver Scotty Pollacheck grabbed the wheel of James' car and sprinted the quarter-mile in 12.643 seconds -- a record for the National Electric Drag Racing Association.

Here's a curious bit of data for budget-conscious drag racers or anyone interested in EV efficiency: Each quarter-mile run in a Roadster Sport costs eight to 16 cents if you're burning up the track and trying to set new records. By contrast, a quarter-mile sprint at similar speeds in a conventional gas guzzler would cost $5 to $26 per sprint, based on current gasoline prices.

See for yourself: Events and store openings

We will soon open our regional sales and service site in Munich, Germany – the first Tesla store in continental Europe. Following a VIP event Sept. 10 hosted by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the store will open to the public. If you live nearby or are visiting Munich for Wiesn (Oktoberfest), which begins the following week, please stop by our showroom at Blumenstr. 17 80331, Munich, Germany.

The next week, Tesla will electrify one of the auto industry's most important events: the 63rd International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, Germany. This will be the worldwide auto show debut of the 2010 Roadster Sport, and it will be the European debut of the Model S. Our executives will kick off the media preview on Sept. 15 and wrap up the show with a special keynote on Sept. 18. The public portion of the biennial Frankfurt show is Sept. 17-27. The Tesla booth is in Halle 5, B28. Please visit to get a look at the Model S and talk to our sales representatives, or schedule a Roadster Sport drive.

Tesla's new headquarters in California's Silicon Valley

Tesla will move its corporate headquarters and manufacture electric vehicle components in a renovated building in the Stanford Research Park in Palo Alto, Calif. Tesla is leasing a sprawling complex with space for up to 650 people – the future home for all the top talent we are aggressively recruiting worldwide. Tesla has more than 150 job openings and is eager to hire the best and brightest engineers worldwide.

The buildings are the epicenter of a historic area near Stanford's main campus and the Silicon Valley garage in Palo Alto where Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard built their original audio oscillator. Tesla will renovate the facility to the highest environmental standards, incorporating sustainable building practices certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. Construction is expected to begin this fall.

Oh, Canada!

Later this year we will begin delivering cars in Canada, a region uniquely positioned to become a premier showcase for Tesla. Canada and Norway are the only two countries worldwide where the majority of electricity comes from renewable resources, including run-of-river small hydro, wind, biomass, geothermal and solar energy. An EV recharged from the current Canadian grid, on average, would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 85 percent compared to an equivalent gasoline-powered vehicle. In hydro-dominant British Columbia, Quebec and Manitoba, the reduction would be an impressive 98 percent.

Teslas are champs in the ice and snow. We perform cold-weather testing in Sweden, and we've already delivered our first European cars to Scandinavia. Our electric seat warmers and heating vents thaw drivers on frigid nights. We have two hard top options –including a gorgeous clear-coat carbon fiber roof, very popular in Northern climates.

Stay tuned for details on our highly anticipated regional sales and service center in Toronto – and watch for a Roadster at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival Sept. 9-10. We will also be opening stores in upcoming months in Chicago, Miami, Washington DC and Monaco. And be sure to catch glimpses of the Roadster during New York's Fashion Week in late September.

Thanks!

Tesla Motors

A new type of solar panel using human hair could provide the world with cheap, green electricity, believes its teenage inventor.

Milan Karki, 18, who comes from a  village in rural Nepal, believes he has found the solution to the developing world's energy needs.

The young inventor says hair is easy to use as a conductor in solar panels and could revolutionise renewable energy.

Wind is the fastest growing renewable energy in Europe - making up a third of new energy, with 20 turbines added every working day in 2008, according to EU statistics. What the European wind energy industry now wants is to expand - offshore. Ocean winds are a stronger and more predictable form of energy than the ones on land, and the industry is pushing a $57 billion investment to allow broad-winged turbines to spin at sea. The diminutive E-Up! is just 125.6-inches long – a Mini Cooper is 20 inches longer – and isn’t going to haul four kids to soccer practice. And its 11.3 second 0-60 time won’t win any drag races. Any in-seat DVD screens, heated leather seats, and drowsiness-sensing lane-departure warning systems? Nope. But none of that gets to the point. If all goes as planned, by 2013, E-Up! will be a mass-produced all-electric car from a major automaker, accessible to the average person. Volkswagen is even calling it the Beetle of the 21st century.

Introduced Tuesday ahead of the press preview day at Frankfurt’s International Auto Show, the E-Up! has a 500-lbs lithium-ion battery pack stored in the floor. Supplementing that is a 15-square-foot roof-mounted solar array, as well as another three square feet of solar cells mounted on the back of the vehicle’s sun visors. All told, Volkswagen says the big coppertop packs enough juice for about a 62-mile range between five-hour charges.

Valcent EU reports the company's vertical farming System has now been successfully in continuous operation for 60 days, validating both operating costs and yields, which many potential customers are reviewing with the company. Valcent Products EU is in final negotiations and expects to sell several Verticrop systems this quarter.

Chris Bradford, Managing Director of Valcent EU, noted that the launch represented "a milestone in the history of the company and in worldwide sustainable food production." Bradford introduced John Craven, respected authority and champion of rural affairs and a leading UK television personality and host of the BBC's "Countryfile" show, a rural and farming events program, who was awarded the Millennium Honors for service to broadcasting. In his address, Mr. Craven stated, that VertiCrop's vertical farming system "is a pioneering growing system which will have many uses. The future of food production will need to answer a fundamental question of food miles and being able to grow enough food. VertiCrop is one of the answers to those questions."

In welcoming the invited guests, Simon Tonge, Executive Director of the Paignton Zoo said that this "unique system is the first of its kind in the world which will not only enable the Zoo to make substantial savings on their annual food bills, but also enhance the lives of the Zoo animals by providing them with nutritious fresh fodder grown on site on a year round basis." Tonge added, "while during these tough financial times, funding for new projects is virtually non-existent, we were pleased to make an exception by joining Valcent in this venture, not only to benefit from the cost savings it affords us, but because the whole concept ticks so many boxes in terms of our commitment to the environment."
