Reiteration: Debate is a form of resolving contention between individual perceptions. The idea is to negotiate and separate the unproductive from the productive. Debate is a means to an end. Does the means justify the ends? One cannot debate that question. If one does not debate that question, then, other means to other ends will be obviously considered by one. One such 'other means' is to tax. I sent a challenge to William Hogeland, as I tend to do, as a 'heads up' concerning my efforts to Debate certain vital ideas floating around in modern human social circles. What is current is currently vital. What is current, now, is taxation without representation for some and too much for others. What happened in history is very similar and instructive. Tax can be voluntary as a direct result of peaceful debate resolutions or tax can be involuntarily collected and, least one forgets, tax can also be a subversive or 'hidden' flow of stuff from one to another; also known as a con game. The taxor somehow convinces the taxee that continuing the flow is in his own best interest. A particularly good taxor can even manage to convince the taxee to dig a hole, jump in, and stand still while the taxor shoots the taxee with the gun build by the taxee and with the bullet supplied by the taxee. People are a groopee lot. They can gather together in the endeavor to extract taxes from those who are less inclined to group together. The process requires debate as the means to the end; a necessary tool arriving at a plan. A plan is a means to an end. Often the process requires stealth. The intended victims are left out of the Debate; on purpose. One doesn't telegraph the true purpose of the tax. One doesn't telegraph the true purpose of the tax. That would be political suicide. One must convince oneself that the tax is just or the process becomes no more than simple theft; an honor among theives. Some people, on the other hand, group together in defense against taxation without representation, without just cause, and this common sense common cause is usually a result of impending or current crisis. One might, for example, find just cause to call a meeting among fellow 'friiends of liberty', setting aside for the moment the need to produce life's necessities, if, evidence suggests that the tax man cometh. The tax man, invariably, has paper in hand authorizing the tax. The paper says right on it, in black and white, or green backed, all the evidence required to call the cause to order. Resolution: Hear ye, Hear ye: It is resolved, by this effort, of careful deliberation, and heated debate, in voluntary union, to withdrawal from named 'authorities' and their treacherous methods of extracting value from our meager existence, we the people hereby discredit all usage of worthless paper money for any credits public or private. What? This isn't Franklin's science. Let's use whiskey to lube our industry. Each one of us can produce the stuff in our back yards, like a Solar Panel in the future, and we can use whiskey as our private voluntary currency. It is not as good as gold but the bastards drove the gold out, by Gresham's Law, whoever that is, out of the country. We can even get some of that gold back if the moneyed men, the friends of order (orders) will open up the Mississippi. That is another battle but now we must prepare to make ends meet on our own. What? It isn't that tough dude. Just make more whiskey than you can possibly consume and use that oversupply to trade for the stuff you can't make on your own. What? Look. First put down the whiskey bottle. OK Now - what would you like to bring home while you are here in town? I need some new shoes and it looks like I need some more gun powder and lead. Alright - how much whiskey did you bring to town? 10 bottles Big party tonight huh? Yea baby Look at Jeb over there - Hey Jeb; do you need some whiskey? Yup Do you have gun powder Jeb? Yup Are you sober enough to get it yet? Yup Yup Great - can we move on with the resolution? Look fellas, this resolution has a lot of other mumbo jumbo in it, just for the record, for posterity you know, but let me speak frankly. OK We need to set a standard for our whiskey trade. Why? It makes things a lot easier in the long run. Jeb - how many bottles do you want for that keg of powder? I don’t know. Let me do some figuring. Don’t bother. The drunk will argue for days on that trade. Look he passed out. Make it so simple that the town idiot can figure it out. If we don’t, I’m telling you, we may end up electing the town idiot for president. Come on guys, and gals, we are spending too much time bickering about simple math. How about 10 bottles of whiskey for on keg of powder? That is 5 for half. I can sell 10 bottles for one gold coin, if , anyone has any gold. I can also go to Philly and buy one keg of powder for on gold coin. Just post your trades at the general store where everyone can see the going rate. Before long everyone will know just how much a bottle of whiskey is worth and it will be almost as good as gold. Heh, can’t get drunk on gold; unless you’re Alexander Hamilton! Sounds good let’s get home. The oldest boy is mighty scared about that story where white guys dressed up as Indians. They have been stirrin’ up the real Indians - too bad too since “those” Indians sure liked our Whiskey. Hold on -we need to pass the hat for the Reverend here as it is his Church we’re using for this mess. He’s gotta clean it up for services. We need to set a date too for the next meetin’. Bring more whiskey caus’ we need to elect some representatives goin’ to Philly so as to do the neighborly thing and let them know what’s up out here on the frontier.
