Senator Gravel
To Broadcast Alternate Debate


Gravel Supporters Nationwide,   


If you live within driving distance of Philadelphia, you can help former Senator and current Democratic Presidential Candidate Mike Gravel protest MSNBC's arbitrary decision to exclude him from the Democratic debate it will be hosting tonight at Drexel University.

After originally making arrangements to include all the Democratic candidates, MSNBC (owned by General Electric) reversed itself and created questionable criteria apparently devised to exclude the most outspoken critic of the military-industrial complex.  Despite having met all but the most arbitrary fundraising requirements, Senator Gravel has been shut out of the debate.

In lieu of this, Senator Gravel will be speaking at the World Café Live (3025 Walnut St. in Philadelphia) at an alternate Democratic Debate.  Participants will have the opportunity to watch the debate with the Senator and listen to his views as the evening unfolds.  Afterward, the Senator will take questions from the audience until midnight. 


The entire event will be broadcast at Gravel2008.us live from the World Café starting at 8:30pm ET.

We can't stop corporate censorship by MSNBC, but we have the power to let the American people learn about the candidates -- even the ones General Electric wants to silence.

Earlier in the day, the Philadelphia Regional Antiwar Network is sponsoring a peace rally a few short blocks away at 34th and Chestnut.  Senator Gravel signs will be available there (or bring your own!!) and many of the rally participants will be joining us inside.

It's hard to have a bad debate performance when:

** The audience is planted in your favor
** The questions are planted in your favor
** The questioners are your supporters
** The after debate spin room includes 2 former staff members and 1 current campaign analyst

The post debate was as Clinton-friendly as the actual debate.
The CNN debate may have been pre-planned and censored every step of the way, but CNN did not have to worry about a Clinton-friendly environment in the post debate.

The Republican CNN/YouTube debate looked more like an episode of Jerry Springer than a presidential debate. Senator John McCain was asked a question about taxes and decided to go way off topic and attack Rep. Ron Paul for his stance on Iraq and wanting to bring the troops home.

McCain accused Paul of what he called the same sort of appeasement that allowed Hitler to take power and WWII to happen, and told him he’d just returned from Iraq and said he had a message for Ron from “the troops” — and the audience let him have it. Paul put it right back in his face by reminding him that he has received more donations from active duty military personnel than any other Republican candidate. Oh, did anyone notice Chuck Norris in the audience? This stuff just writes itself…

Here are our counts for how long each candidate spoke during the first part of the debate
Romney -- 7:03, during 9 times
McCain -- 5:09, during 4 times
Giuliani -- 5:08, during 9 times
Thompson -- 4:38, during 4 times
Huckabee -- 4:14, during 5 times
Paul -- 3:27, during 4 times
Tancredo -- 2:20, during 4 times
Hunter -- 2:16, during 3 times
 
One note -- Huckabee did not get a chance to speak until 26 minutes into the debate, and Paul did not get his chance until more than a half hour into the debate.

(10.) They aren't debates!

(9.) The debates were hijacked from the truly independent League of Women Voters in 1986.

(8.) The "independent and non-partisan" Commission on Presidential Debates is neither independent nor non-partisan.

(7.) The secretly negotiated debate contract bars Kerry and Bush from any and all other debates for the entire campaign.

(6.) The debate contract effectively excludes all other serious presidential candidates from participating in the debates.

(5.) All members of the studio audience must be certified as "soft" supporters of Bush and Kerry, under selection procedures they approve.

(4.) These "soft" audience members must "observe in silence."

(3.) The "extended discussion" portion of the debate cannot exceed 30 seconds.

(2.) Important issues are locked out by the CPD debate rules and party control.

(1.) Fortune 100 corporations are the main funders of the CPD-sponsored debates, and the CPD's co-chairs are corporate lobbyists.

Questions came from a gay general from Northern California, a black father and son from Atlanta worried about crime, and a young white Texan asking the candidates for their views on flying the Confederate flag.
