EPISODE 1: “Minimum Wage”
The day after the Oscars, nominee Morgan Spurlock and his fiancée Alex uproot themselves from the financial security of their fabulous New York City lives and move to the struggling heart of the Midwest – Columbus Ohio — and work at multiple minimum wage jobs for 30 Days.

Why?

In order to answer any question whatsoever, accurately, a need exists to distance oneself from the impulse to make believe. Call this method: The Scientific Method. The scientist or curious observer has to set aside the stuff that inspires curiosity. The desire to answer a question tends to create error.

Example:

Can you have your cake and eat it too?

A hungry scientist may make a mistake.

Hypothesis:

Yes, I can have my cake and eat it too.

Experiment:

Eat cake and then measure the cake.

ERROR (The cake turns into feces)

In order to answer a question, then, it is vital to create a viewpoint that has no vested interest in the answer. The scientist must become a disinterested observer and all potential answers must be considered objectively. One (cake) minus one (cake) equals zero (cake). Scientists often go hungry as they take their objective position.

Why does the American Dream work and how can an individual human being earn a place in the Human Race?

Please travel with me toward objectivity to find that disinterested viewpoint before trying to answer the question. Once we position ourselves objectively, then, we can eliminate many errors as we try to answer the present question.

I like to imagine being a spirit. Today, now, I will pick the spirit of my Great Grandmother who was called: “Nanny”.  Nanny and I spirit away. We have tea on the moon and look back at Earth, human history, current human activity, and human future possibilities. We freeze time when we feel like freezing time. We can zoom in to any place on earth or not and we can ponder or just sip tea.

Nanny and I are disinterested in the subject matter. We simply want to chat, and enjoy our time together; two tea spoons of sugar and a dash of milk please.

I ask why?

Nanny proposes a one word answer:

Sympathy

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=sympathy

I ask: Pity?

Nanny says: No; and she extrapolates (explains in detail)

Pity is the here and now. It is the interested version of sympathy like looking at these people (we travel to a husband and wife who are so hungry that they look upon their new born baby and are tempted to consider eating it). Sympathy is trying to know their pain but not actually feeling their pain; a searching for empathy.

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=empathy

If you arrive at empathy, then, you become interested and you can feel pity for that family and for yourself too. Disinterested sympathy is affinity; it just is…like observing everything all at once.

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=affinity

I don’t quite understand.

You can’t. The best you can do while living; is pretend to be objective like having tea with your Nanny on the moon. It is a good thing that you are not tempted to eat your children no?

It is a good thing.

Do you pity yourself?

No I am happy to have the time imagining tea with nanny.

Do you pity those people starving to death?

I can’t go there; it is too difficult. It hurts too much.

You have arrived at a scientific disinterest; what was the question?

Why does the American Dream work and how can an individual human being earn a place in the Human Race?

Sympathy

My dear Nanny, I say, you bore my grandmother who bore my mom and I know that times were tough in those days so it is my pleasure to have the life you gave me somehow. Is it good enough to have sympathy and no more? It seems too easy.

Easy! Don’t get me riled up child.

Nanny; I’m 48 years old now.

And so you shouldn’t be so careless.

Nanny speeds things up back at earth. She hits the fast forward button. Look now at what happens if the current level of sympathy does not change. Does it look easy?

It looks like a race to the bottom; like cannibalism.

Don’t worry Joey; people wise up. People are sympathetic but it isn’t easy.

What is so hard about sympathy?

Falsehood turns sympathy into pity and pity turns into hatred. Was it hard to look at the starving family tempted with those horrible thoughts?

Yes?

Is it easy to pity them?

Yes?

Is it easy to pity yourself?

I’m having tea with Nanny; what is to pity about me?

So....is not easy to pity yourself?

It is not easy to pity myself.

It is difficult to place yourself in their shoes. Why would anyone want to suffer so badly?

I’d rather be happy.

Nanny takes a moment to reflect: Yes, it is the reason for living so far as I can remember.

Sympathy, not pity, allows you to see the need for more sympathy. Once a person is able to sympathize with another, less fortunate, person, then, it is obviously important to keep in touch; to open up lines of communication and too trade value for value – good for good.

Pity makes you feel too much pain. It turns sympathy into destructive energy. Going into another person’s shoes becomes too difficult and too painful. Pity closes doors instead of opening doors. Those who suffer receive no value yet they offer great value.

Great value! What is valuable about suffering?

Look again. Let’s fast forward some. Do you see the family eating their baby?

No.

Would you eat your baby?

Never!

How do you know?

Hmmmmm…

There is great value in knowing what is good. How can you know what is good without knowing what is bad? There is no pause, fast forward, and rewind in life.  Each step taken is a choice, each moment must be followed by another moment, and no one can arrive at the next moment without making a decision; even if the decision is to do nothing. People who suffer have extremely valuable experiences; perhaps the most valuable experience because their experience cost so much life – very much life. Let’s fast forward again with the whole human race.

Please no.

Be objective Joey. Don’t suffer; just learn. It is in your best interest to learn from those who have to suffer. Their pain doesn’t have to be your pain. You can use their mistakes to your advantage and you can avoid unnecessary suffering. Be objective. Don’t harm yourself. Harming yourself leads to blame. You may choose to blame those who suffer for your own pain which leads to the creation of destructive energy. You may begin to think in terms of punishment. You may desire the punishment of yourself and the punishment of those who already suffer greatly. Be objective. Be sympathetic. Try to trade value for value – good for good. Avoid harming yourself and you can avoid harming others.

Can we add a little more sympathy this time?

How will we learn?

OK. I’ll try to be objective.

OK. We can add sympathy later. I want to show you something important. While we watch the earth fast forward without sympathy we can watch this meter on the side bar here:

It looks like the electric power meter on the side of my house.

It is. Only this power meter can measure all the power generated on the planet; every form of power. If the power meter spins clockwise, then, it measures an increase in constructive power. It will not go clockwise because there is no increase in the constructive power of sympathy. It will not go clockwise because there is now a problem on earth; oil production is slowing down. Oil can be used constructively or destructively like any other form of power; like sympathy can be constructive objectively and sympathy can be destructive as pity. Oil can be used to power military might and oil can be used to make baby food. Oil can also be used to make things that make clean power like solar panels, wind generators, and hydrogen generators. You already know about this stuff. Watch the meter.

It is spinning down to a stop and people are suffering.

Yes; this is because the total power available for human life is decreasing. People are scrambling around trying to seize, control, and consume the decreasing supply. There is little opportunity for sympathy. It is the race to the bottom. It is a race to be warm, clothed, and fed or be cold, hungry and naked. It is rapidly becoming a global human conflict; kill or be killed. It is a question of having power or having no power.

The meter has stopped.

Now there is only so much power left and fewer people can see the need to make more power. Power has become deadly in the eyes of many. They see no difference between constructive power and destructive power as if power was only destructive because it is; they make it so. Greed replaces sympathy as if life was nothing more than a place in the line leading to death; as if the object of the game called life is to be the last one in line and the last one to survive.

The meter is spinning the other way.

Total power is being used up rapidly and the only reason people aren’t dying faster is because fewer people are alive that need the power.  The game has become desperate and the players who have no pity whatsoever are the ones winning. The winning players know how to seize and control power and they know how to conserve power.

Wow! The winning players consume almost no power; they use power to gain more power.

Let’s rewind to the present. You have learned the lesson of sympathy.

What?

Sympathy is how power is used to gain more power. No pity. This is the American Dream free from perverse destructive falsehood. Live and let live. Earning life; consuming less while seizing and controlling more power.

I didn’t see any sympathy. I only saw greed.

The biggest problem facing the human race is falsehood. I see sympathy. You see greed. When you now try to communicate what you see to someone else, who is now living, you will need to use language to transfer what you see. If you use the word greed, then, you will transfer falsehood and cause the power of destructive energy to increase. The meter spins backwards faster. If you use the word sympathy, then, the other person is left with his own puzzle. Use the word sympathy.

What do you think is the difference between greed and sympathy?

One word transfers constructive energy and the other word transfers destructive energy.

How?

Sympathy is a mutual agreement. Greed is an individual emotion. Sympathy binds people together with a common purpose. Greed separates people into conflict.

But the greedy people win.

They do not win alone. Fast forward again and see. Greed alone separates people in a race to consume the most - quickest; no one associates with the greedy ones. Greed alone is destructive and only destructive.

Let’s rewind to the present and make everyone simple; everyone is greedy and no one has any sympathy.

They are all killing each other.

Life has no meaning beyond consumption; pure greed. There is no need for language. Note how the dictionary is never used.

They speak fewer and fewer words. They speak only violence. There is something to be said for this scenario.

What is that?

There is no falsehood.

Greed is greed.

Greed is not sympathy.

When language is used to create falsehood, then, language becomes destructive. I can say greed when I mean sympathy and I can say sympathy when I mean greed. I may or may not know the difference. If I do not know the difference but I do have sympathy, then, I am going to try to earn a living. I will try to produce more than I consume. The problem with falsehood starts when my confusion is communicated. I could use the word greed and I could think about being greedy about human life; like saying: “I want to produce more than I consume because I am greedy about human life and the only way to preserve human life is to produce more than I consume or at least consume only as much as I produce.”

So I use the word greed to express my concern for human life. I am greedy about human life. What does my sympathetic fellow human being think about my word greed?

Not much.

Be objective. The sympathetic fellow human being could receive accurate communication and agree to join in this greed for human life.

OK.

So why use the word greed at all if greed means sympathy?

Why?

Falsehood

Falsehood?

Fast forward to a time when very few people remain on the planet; now add the constructive energy of sympathy. Give each person some sympathy. Remember how they spoke and watch how language evolves. Watch to see what words become current. Words are a form of currency.

Help.

Yes help.

Hope.

Yes Hope.

Love

Yup

Good

Art

Get the picture?

Language can be constructive.

Listen for the word: Liberty.

I don’t hear it.

Why not?

Yea… why not?

Liberty exists like air. People breathe it because they have sympathy. Do you hear them using the word air?

No.

OK. Now let’s return to the present.

The American Dream is earning. It is producing more than consuming. It is helping each other; it is sympathy in action. No pity. No blame. It is looking in the mirror and calling up honesty, courage, and a determination to help fellow human beings because helping other human beings is right; the only road to prosperity and the only way to be free from all the hardship imposed by nature - sharing the burden.

Rewind to 1776.

Hit play.

Do you hear liberty now?

It is everywhere.

People are becoming free. Free from what? Listen carefully.

There are too many voices; freedom from religious persecution, freedom from taxation, freedom from the crown and royalty.

People are becoming free and they are doing what?

It looks to me like they are struggling; not free.

Listen.

I hear independence.

I hear friends of liberty.

This looks to me like our experiments with greed and sympathy. It also looks like the problem that occurs when the power meter slows down, stops, and goes the wrong way. To me the objective lesson teaches the value of constructive energy. When people become dependent upon a current situation that does not generate enough constructive power, then, people act to free themselves from that situation. They move toward independence. They seek better ways to create more useful power.

As soon as the independent people separate they begin the process of forming a new situation. They move from failed situations toward productive situations and people do not act alone. Independence is not separation from just anything or anyone. Independence is knowing the difference between a productive situation and a destructive one.

Fast forward to the present and take away all language including the language of violence.

No one communicates with any other one?

Hit play. What happens?

They are all dying.

Not all. The ones who consume as much as they produce remain alive. The ones who consume less than they produce prosper because they have more time to figure out ways to produce more and consume less.

Rewind and add only falsehood.

They die off faster.

Yes; falsehood arms some and disarms others allowing the more powerful ones to survive at the expense of the less powerful.

Play it out.

The only ones left are the ones who isolate.

Keep watching.

Each time two isolated ones meet only one survives.

Zoom in and listen closely. There are two meeting now.

They embrace and then insult each other; now they are fighting. One has a knife. The other pulls out a gun. Their faces are contorted as if suffering from severe pain.

Look closely do you see horror, pity, sorrow, and hatred all at once?

Yes; they look like demons.

I think you see something called duplicity. It is an inner conflict that results from an embraced falsehood contained within a conscience. The contradiction is too much to bear. It is a fearful thing; an exponential implosion. The one lie requires another lie and two lies require four; soon the lies cannot be fed with reason; it is madness.

Rewind to the discovery of oil. Take careful note of the meter. Watch how constructive power begins to accelerate and see where the power goes.

It empowers the few first and then spreads out to many others.

Keep playing and watch the meter.

The meter is slowing down fast. It is stopped. It is going backwards very fast now.

What is happening on the Earth?

War.

The meter goes up when people are busy constructing. It goes up fast when a new efficient and cheap source of power is discovered. When the construction is directed by the few, then, the constructive power becomes dangerous. The few see how making power can be used to take power. They have sympathy without conscience. They see enemies everywhere; threats to their power. Constructive energy is directed toward destructive purposes. Power to make more power is perverted into power to take power.

The greatest defensive power is the battle against falsehood. Power used to take power is always destructive; never constructive.

Rewind to any war. Stop there at 1935 before the Nazi and Soviet invasion of Poland. Now remove any capability by anyone for lies. What happens?

The meter stopped.

I think everyone is confused. It could take awhile to recover. Let’s have some more tea.
