Joe, I think this is what is wrong:

close to the top of the page, maybe 1/4 of the way down, this information can be found on this website:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/211432

How Headers and Footers Affect Margin Settings

Word prints headers and footers in the top and bottom margins. If the header or footer is too large to fit in the margin, Word adjusts the top and bottom margin to accommodate the header or footer. That is, if the header or footer becomes too large vertically to fit in the margin, it starts expanding downward (for the header) and upward (for the footer), reducing the amount of text that can be displayed in the body of the document.

To prevent Word from moving the main document text (downward or upward) when the header or footer gets too large to fit in the margin, follow these steps:

On the File menu, click Page Setup.
Click the Margins tab.
Type a hyphen (-) before the Top or Bottom margin setting.

NOTE: If the header or footer is too large, it may overwrite (superimpose) the main document text.

With that information, and my little experiment noted in the comment above this comment, I think that with the removal and the reinsertion of the footers text is expanding. i.e., if footers were removed while pages were being moved around, the text flowed into the full length of the page leaving no margin for the footer. Then when the footers are reinserted, Word reshuffles the text so that the footer doesn't write over the text in the page.

So, while we were working on the book the page numbers were on so it was not a problem. But I am thinking that maybe while some hacking :) was going on, maybe the page numbers turned off and then the text took up all the room at the bottom of the page and then when page numbers were re-added the text expanded creating more pages.

Now that is probably confusing, but I think we found the problem.

I will work at getting the footers reinserted and the pages reconfigured so that the text does not over flow the footer margin. I think that I can get that figured out. I am not sure about timing. I am running out of time today before dinner and we have church tonight. I admit I was sleepy while trying to do bookwork so I decided to take a little nap and then the phone started ringing and I was detracted for a while with helping our neighbor.

But all in all, I think we are in a good spot to fix the problem at this time. Much further than I was last night or today while I was sleepy.

I partially read the email you sent from bookmasters. It sounds good. I don't want you to have to go thru lots of trouble sending me things, but if it is not too much trouble it is helpful for me, because today I went back to look at the notes that the original bookmasters person you were working with to check on margin sizes, and even the size of the book. So the information is worth knowing about in case I have questions about how to do some "publishing" work, I have some references.

So now I am going to break until I have a segment of time where I can devote my full attention to the footnote/paging effort as it will take a measure of concentration on my part. And I still have the mind of that fish, but not the degenerate voice that comes from that fish.
