I have been thinking about this phrase uttered by Thomas Paine lately:

"Society in every state is a blessing"

Is it really true that every state of society is a blessing?

Is every society a blessing?

Is everyone in every society blessed?

What about a miniority persecuted by a majority?

Is a society that does not value liberty a blessing?

The Negros were a society of slaves before the Civil war. Was society a blessing to them?

What does "Society in every state is a blessing" actually mean?

Then, I ask, is government in its best state a necessary evil? Really? In its very best state, it is but evil?

I am wondering about those words. They are eloquent, but are they really true?
