Cost has often been an obstacle to homeowners wishing to install solar tiles. A 2001 study found that solar tiles tended to cost more than traditional panels (see References 4, Table 1). However, in 2009, the CIGS advancement in solar-film technology was announced. New solar shingles, expected to become widely available in 2011, cost 10 to 15 percent less per watt than traditional flat panels. In addition, the new shingles can reportedly be installed in about ten hours, nearly two-thirds less time than required by older shingle designs
