As far as I know so far the amount of money earned in California for a home electric production sale will not exceed the home electric consumption rate. In other words: here in California (Southern California) the electric companies will not pay out any money to home owners who make electricity and supply that new electricity to the grid. The electric companies will only reduce their charge to the homeowner based upon the total net transfer of electric power. If the home owner makes as much electricity as the home owner uses (makes 100 kilowatt/hours during the day when the sun is out and uses 100 kilowatt/hours when the sun is not out), then the homeowner is not charged for electricity by the electric companies. Home electric producers do not receive money from the electric companies - as far as I know - in California. I've asked an electrician, and I have not actually tried to sell electricity yet.
