All too aware of the raging climate change debate, automakers are hailing themselves as masters of energy efficiency at Frankfurt's International Motor Show this week. Suddenly, Germany's car industry has gone green: Complicated diesel hybrids are no longer too expensive and even electric cars are being given a new lease on life.

 

But the German GM subsidiary will have put the pedal to the metal, because the new type of battery has also sparked the interest of other carmakers. Mercedes is on the verge of mass producing an electric version of its small city model the Smart and Volkswagen will present its own urban car at the IAA. With its motor in the trunk, an electric version is already in the works.
