A World Too Complex To Be Managed

A major lesson that will likely emerge from the study of chaos is that our world is simply too complex to be centrally managed. If we are to live well in an inconstant and unpredictable society, we need all the personal autonomy and spontaneity that we can muster. Perhaps in the same way that our ancestors learned to shift their thinking from a geocentric to a heliocentric model of the universe, our children and grandchildren will discover that human society functions better when it is organized horizontally rather than vertically. In words that have become increasingly familiar to us, “nothing grows from the top down.”

Once in awhile I read something that agrees so completely with my ability to manage a world too complex, that, I must pause and start adding.

Hitherto the struggle between conservatism and progress has seemed doubtful. Victory has kissed the banner, alternately, of either host. At length the serried ranks of conservatism alter. Reform, so called, is becoming confessedly more potent than its antagonist. The admission is reluctantly forced from pallid lips that revolutions—political, social, and religious—constitute the programme of the coming age. Whither he is bound? A veritable “New Era” to the foolish as well as to the wise.” Nor is this state of things confined to Europe. The agitations in America may be more peaceful, but they are not less profound. The foundations of old beliefs and habits of thought are breaking up. The old guarantees of order are fast falling away. A veritable “new era” with us, too, is alike impending and inevitable.

What remains to be done, then, for wise men, is clearly this: to attempt to penetrate the future by investigating the past and the present to ascertain whether there be no elements of calculation capable of fixing with tolerable certainty the precise point in the sidereal heavens of human destiny toward which our whole system is confessedly verging with accelerated velocity. To penetrate the gloom which encircles the orbit of our future progression might, at least, end the torture of suspense, even to those who may be least content with the nature of the solution. “If,” says Carlyle again, “the accused nightmare that is crushing out the life of us and ours would take a shape, approach us like the Hyrcanian tiger, the Behemoth of Caos, or the Archfiend himself,--in any shape that we could see and fasten on,--a man can have himself shot with cheerfulness, but it needs that he shall clearly see for what.”

All cannot add at once with any hope of arriving at the same exact sum. Or not?

My thinking has arrived at a conclusion that can be tested for validity. You can help.

Living organisms travel through time and space on a course determined by the individual organism.

If the answer is false, or even maybe, then my next question intends to prove otherwise; not as a refutation of god or authority of any kind, rather, to point out the limitations imposed by nature upon living organisms as 'we' (I a am one such organism) move through time and space. That limitation is time and space.

We are at point A.

True or false?

I am at my point A. You are at your point A.

At some time in the future we will be at point B.

I hope the reader can choose to see this clearly. The reader cannot get to point C without first choosing to move from point A to point B.

Some readers may already be at point C waiting for this diatribe to catch-up.

If the reader chooses to go from point A to point 572, then, the reader does not go to point B.

Point C:

The choice to move can only be one choice.

Call that one choice one or zero. Call that choice true or false. Call that choice right or wrong. Call that choice anything whatsoever, it does not matter, that one choice, the only choice, is one choice once it is made.

Point C is my way of describing the limits of human physical perception. Our brains and our bodies reside in physical time and space. There is only oneness from our viewpoints. No maybes. No grey area. No second chance at a second choice. We are stuck in time and space; for now.

I think of this fact like thinking about computers. Like this:

Are human brains like computers?

If the reader answers: maybe, then, the reader has made his choice but he has not answered this question. He can try again.

If the reader answers yes, then, the reader has made his choice.

The writer, the reader, the question, and the computer can choose to ask the question again if the first answer was 0.

Are human brains like computers?

I've made up my mind, this time, to say yes. I do this:

Unless!

Computers can be programmed with randomness.

Be that as it may. People remain stuck in time and space with one choice at one time only and that is it. No second chances. May God be wise enough to offer some help.
